HET ZAKELIJK VERKEER IN NEDERLAND: OMVANG, KENMERKEN EN ACHTERGRONDEN

Recently, the Dutch transport policy acknowledged that business travel was a specific category of travel which deserves explicit attention, because of its particular economic importance. In view of the very limited empirical and theoretical understanding of business travel, an exploratory investigation was carried out. This paper described the empirical results of this study. Analysis using national travel survey data, showed that business travel constituted a significant part of total mobility with a share of 11%. The majority of kilometers travelled, (92%) was by car. The peak of business travel in terms of distance travelled, which was not so pronounced, coincided with the peak of all travel combined. This made peak period travel conditions important for business travel. Unexpectedly, the analysis of trip chains showed that a considerable number of business trips originated from the home and/or were destined for the home. This implied that many business trips were made instead of journey to work, which was a relevant finding, with respect to policy decisions. Investigating the business travel pattern spatially, it was found that rather more than half of the trips were intra-urban. The inter-provincial trips made up only 15%, of the total, but accounted for half of the distance travelled. The spatial pattern of business travel strongly reflected that of economic activities. The so-called randstad provinces as well as noord-brabant and gelderland generated most of business travel with the four large metropolitan areas as major generators. (Author/TRRL)
