INFLUENCING (CAR) MOBILITY ON AN INDIVIDUAL LEVEL . TRANSPORTATION PLANNING COLLOQUIUM 1988, THE NETHERLANDS IN WHITE PAPERS. STRATEGY AND PRAGMATISM IN POLICY AND RESEARCH. THE HAGUE 24-25. 1988, VOLUME I. II, AND III

BEINVLOEDING VAN DE (AUTO) MOBILITEIT OP INDIVIDUEEL NIVEAU

Car use is causing more and more problems with respect to environment and congestion. Therefore, effective policies to influence modal choice have become imperative, and such policies are being studied. Recent research has shown that the proportion of commuters to be influenced by general policy measures is decreasing. Growing individualization and differentiation in life styles make it likely that other transport behaviour will become less easy to influence on a general level, too. For that reason an understanding of the decision process that shapes transport behaviour on an individual level, becomes more and more important. The behaviour of individual consumers -in this case: transport consumers -is typically studied by the discipline of social psychology. In this paper the contribution of social psychology to the understanding of transport behaviour and to the development of measures aimed at influencing transport behaviour, is considered. Especially, policy measures of a socio-psychological nature will be examined. (Author/TRRL)
