TRAVEL PATTERNS AND MODE USE OF COMMUTERS FROM SMALL TOWNS . TRANSPORTATION PLANNING COLLOQUIUM 1988, THE NETHERLANDS IN WHITE PAPERS. STRATEGY AND PRAGMATISM IN POLICY AND RESEARCH. THE HAGUE 24-25. 1988, VOLUME I. II, AND III

VERVOERMIDDELENGEBRUIK IN HET WOON-WERKVERKEER VAN INWONERS UIT KLEINE KERNEN

This paper deals with the interurban travel pattern of inhabitants of small towns (having less than 30000 inhabitants), and its significance for interurban road traffic in the Netherlands. The size and spatial orientation of these personal travel flows are examined. Personal travel frequency by trip type, mode and purpose are analyzed. Special attention is given to interurban commuting. Nearly half (44%) of the Dutch population lives in small communities, but a far greater part (56%) of all interurban commuters originates from these communities. Partly due to the low level of public transport provision these commuters show a very high level of car use (mode share is nearly 80%). The recent growth in interurban commuting and of congestion on interurban roads strongly depends on the developments that occur with small town dwellers. (Author/TRRL)
