ESTIMATION OF SUBSURFACE GROUND LAYER USING A DATA BASE SYSTEM. PROCEEDINGS OF THE SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NUMERICAL METHODS IN GEOMECHANICS, 11-15 APRIL 1988, INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA. VOLUMES 1 - 3

This paper describes a method to estimate the soil properties of subsurface ground layers quantitatively and qualitatively using a database system. Special attention is given to the evaluation of the reliability of soil properties obtained from field tests and the classification of soil layers so that soil profiles can be drawn automatically. The database system is operated using a personal computer. Details are provided of the database system, and the method to evaluate the reliability of the soil parameters obtained from field measurements such as the standard penetration test (spt). The original data set obtained from a boring test at one site is stored in the computer. This consists of thickness; soil name; colour of soil; symbol for graphic display for each layer; and the distribution of spt n-value with the title of the data set. (TRRL)
