SOIL-STRUCTURE INTERACTION ANALYSIS ON MICROCOMPUTERS. PROCEEDINGS OF THE SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NUMERICAL METHODS IN GEOMECHANICS, 11-15 APRIL 1988, INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA. VOLUMES 1 - 3
This paper describes the uses and capabilities of a sophisticated non linear finite element program, "soilpipe" capable of modelling soil-structure interaction. The program can be implemented on an IBM or compatible microcomputer with at least 512 kb memory. The pre-processor module enables the user to check the input data, and the post-processor module converts the data to useful output, which can be displayed in a variety of forms. The structural members of the program can be beam or bar elements, or both. The program calculates stresses, strains and displacements in the soil elements, and internal forces and displacements in structural elements, by means of analyses which simulate the actual sequence of the construction in a number of steps. The non-linear and stress dependent stress strain properties of the soils are approximated by varying the values of the modulus and Poisson's ratio in accordance with the calculated stresses, using Duncan's model. An increment of an analysis may consist of placement of a layer of fill, placement of a structure, or application of loads such as traffic to a completed structure or soil mass. Guidance is given on how to use soilpipe effectively, and the use of the program is demonstrated using several pipeline projects. (TRRL)
