SEISMIC MODELLING AND DESIGN OF UNDERGROUND STRUCTURES. PROCEEDINGS OF THE SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NUMERICAL METHODS IN GEOMECHANICS, 11-15 APRIL 1988, INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA. VOLUMES 1 - 3

This paper describes the work on seismic modelling and design undertaken to prepare seismic design criteria for underground structures on the Southern California Rapid Transit District (SCRTD) metro rail project. Sections are provided on: (a) design ground motions; (b) the stiffness of underground structures (including a snaking model for tunnel linings and stations); (c) required conditions for pseudostatic treatment of wave response; (d) design of station for racking; and (e) verification of the approach, using the results from two and three dimensional finite element analyses of selected geometries using an input earthquake record consisting of the 1971 San Fernando earthquake scaled up to the SCRTD design earthquakes. Suggestions for further work are also provided. (TRRL)
