RESPONSE OF UNDERGROUND OPENINGS TO EARTHQUAKE AND BLASTING LOADING. PROCEEDINGS OF THE SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NUMERICAL METHODS IN GEOMECHANICS, 11-15 APRIL 1988, INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA. VOLUMES 1 - 3

A complete dynamic analysis of underground openings has to consider the structure as part of the whole system, consisting of the seismic source, the travel path and the structure itself. This article describes a method that separates the signal flow from the source to the structure into steps, and combines the solutions of the single steps in order to obtain the dynamic response of the structure. The following examples demonstrate the efficiency of this method: (a) the calculation of the response of an underground drift, deeply embedded in a layered medium, to an earthquake; (b) the calculated response of a shallow underground drift to blasting loading is compared to results obtained from in-situ dynamic load experiments.
