THE STABILITY OF SLOPES IN CHAMPLAIN SEA CLAYS - A PARAMETRIC STUDY. PROCEEDINGS OF THE SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NUMERICAL METHODS IN GEOMECHANICS, 11-15 APRIL 1988, INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA. VOLUMES 1 - 3
The Ottawa and St Lawrence river valleys have extensive deposits of post-glacial, sensitive clay, named champlain sea clay. These sensitive soils exhibit unusual geotechnical properties and are very susceptible to landslides. This paper reports on the results of an extensive parametric slope stability analysis considering several geometries, varying ground water conditions and non-linear strength envelopes. A total of 135 landslides have been investigated. In order to do this a special computer program has been developed, based upon Bishop's modified analysis. Instead of the commonly used constant strength parameters phi1 and c1, variable effective strength and normal stress values are employed, in order to describe more realistically the curved Mohr-Coulomb failure envelopes for this type of soil. The results are summarized in graphical form, and show the effect of ground water conditions and slope geometry on the factor of safety. (TRRL)
