THE ANALYSIS OF STEEL-REINFORCED EMBANKMENTS ON SOFT CLAY FOUNDATIONS. PROCEEDINGS OF THE SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NUMERICAL METHODS IN GEOMECHANICS, 11-15 APRIL 1988, INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA. VOLUMES 1 - 3

The objective of the present paper is to discuss the factors considered to be important when modelling the behaviour of reinforced embankments. Emphasis is placed on the practical application of such methods to steel reinforced embankments on soft clay foundations. Some results of finite element analyses are presented which illustrate that the mode of failure may vary substantially depending on the amount of reinforcement used and the properties of the foundation soil. It is suggested that results obtained from finite element analyses may form a starting point from which to develop design guidelines for steel reinforced embankments. (TRRL)
