NUMERICAL METHODS FOR LOCATING THE CRITICAL SLIP SURFACE IN SLOPE STABILITY ANALYSIS. PROCEEDINGS OF THE SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NUMERICAL METHODS IN GEOMECHANICS, 11-15 APRIL 1988, INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA. VOLUMES 1 - 3

This paper compares in terms of their speed and efficiency some of the more commonly used nonlinear programming methods for locating the critical slip surface in slope stability analyses. In all these methods the slip surface is approximated by a broken line whose coordinates at the vertices are yielded by the different minimization procedures used. Although all the methods tested require a large number of potential slip surfaces in searching for the minimum, they are all efficient enough to be used in practical applications. (Author/TRRL)
