The slope collapse problem is studied by means of the method of characteristics by introducing two lines of stress discontinuity which originate from the vertex of the slope. It is shown that the problem is composed of two cauchy domains truncated by the lines of discontinuity and connected by a free boundary generalized goursat domain, and that the cauchy domain under the top surface has to be in a passive state in order to obtain a reasonable solution.
