BE-BEM AND IFE-BEM: TWO MODELS FOR UNBOUNDED PROBLEMS IN GEOMECHANICS. PROCEEDINGS OF THE SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NUMERICAL METHODS IN GEOMECHANICS, 11-15 APRIL 1988, INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA. VOLUMES 1 - 3

A new model, (the ife-bem model), for the analysis of underground openings is presented in this paper. This model couples the beam elements (be) with the infinite elements (ife). In order to test the accuracy of the model, 3 problems are analysed using be, ife, ife-bem and be-bem methods. These are: (a) an unlined circular opening under circumferential uniform pressure and under 2 single loads; and (b) a lined opening under circumferential uniform pressure. Stability analyses for a heading with an invert arch installed immediately after excavation are also carried out using both be-bem and ife-bem calculations, and the results are compared. The results show that the be-bem calculation provides more accurate results if there are concentrated loads (for example, a group of prestressed anchors). (TRRL)
