ADAPTIVE CREATION OF KINEMATICAL DISCONTINUITIES. PROCEEDINGS OF THE SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NUMERICAL METHODS IN GEOMECHANICS, 11-15 APRIL 1988, INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA. VOLUMES 1 - 3
The aim of this paper is to discuss the steps involved in the process of a dynamical creation of discontinuities. These steps are: (a) a numerical refinement which must get rid of the stress discontinuities implied by the use of a displacement field method; and (b) a rheological refinement which must allow the creation of new elements once the kinematic inside the element has been relaxed. Both the linear and the non linear cases are presented. (TRRL)
