A CONSTITUTIVE MODEL FOR FROZEN SAND. PROCEEDINGS OF THE SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NUMERICAL METHODS IN GEOMECHANICS, 11-15 APRIL 1988, INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA. VOLUMES 1 - 3

An elasto-viscoplastic constitutive model for frozen sand is proposed based on the elasto-viscoplasticity theory using the new time measure. The proposed model can describe the features of mechanical behavior such as rate sensitivity and strain-softening, under triaxial compression tests. This model is used to simulate triaxial test results with high and low concentrations of sand particles (toyoura sand) at three axial strain rates at temperatures between -10 and -50 degrees centigrade. A comparison is made between the simulated and experimental results. The effect of strain rate, temperature, confining pressure and soil concentration upon the soil deformation and strength are also discussed. The comparison between simulated and experimental results shows that the proposed theory can simulate the behaviour of frozen sand accurately. (TRRL)
