DEFORMATION OF A SEDIMENTARY OVERBURDEN ON A SLOWLY CREEPING SUBSTRATUM. PROCEEDINGS OF THE SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NUMERICAL METHODS IN GEOMECHANICS, 11-15 APRIL 1988, INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA. VOLUMES 1 - 3
An explicit finite-difference computer program, geomec, (geomechanics explicit code), has been further developed and used to investigate in a geological context of a gently sloping elasto-plastic frictional overburden overlaying a mobile viscous substratum of varying thickness. The computed results compare favourably with a simplified analytical result but show also that a yielding material leads to characteristic features in the overburden which resemble areas of growth faulting (extension) and thrusting (compression) accompanied by large lateral movements. The key parameters which differentiate the styles of deformation are examined and quantified. (TRRL)
