NUMERICAL MODELLING OF TUNNEL BLASTING. PROCEEDINGS OF THE SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NUMERICAL METHODS IN GEOMECHANICS, 11-15 APRIL 1988, INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA. VOLUMES 1 - 3

This paper describes the details of the finite element study of the problem of vibrations induced due to blasting associated with the excavation of underground tunnels. The discussion presented is based on the extensive parametric studies of the vibration effects on existing tunnel due to the excavation of a new tunnel using explosives. The various effects such as the rise time of the blast pulse, explosive detonation velocity and the cover between the tunnels have been taken into account for the purpose of this discussion. The primary interest in this investigation is the prediction of the magnitudes of the peak particle velocities experienced at the existing tunnel. (Author/TRRL)
