THE EFFECTS OF NON ACOUSTIC FACTORS ON ANNOYANCE DUE TO TRAFFIC NOISE. ENVIRONMENTAL ANNOYANCE: CHARACTERIZATION, MEASUREMENT, AND CONTROL -- PROCEEDINGS OF THE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ENVIRONMENTAL ANNOYANCE, CONFERENCE CENTRE WOUDSCHOTEN, THE NETHERLANDS, SEPTEMBER 15-18, 1986

This article reviews the various non acoustic factors that can influence the annoyance level caused by traffic noise. Research results are discussed which indicate that an individual's response to noise is not directly proportional to the physical noise level. Evidence is given to support the possibility that the individual's response to noise is partly psychological. Sensitivity to noise is shown to depend on a number of factors. These include: age; sex; whether the individual is housebound; social class; and nature of accommodation. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 820771. (TRRL)
