SUGGESTIONS OF IMPROVEMENT OF TWO-LANE HIGHWAY FOR MIXED TRAFFIC. SELECTED PAPERS ON HIGHWAY AND TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH 1988
This paper describes two main problems of the capacity of two-lane roads with mixed traffic according to relevant research in recent years. Firstly, under mixed traffic conditions, the speed of various kinds of cars is affected by slowly moving vehicles. The factors affecting this have been discussed. The service level should be taken into consideration in the design of a mixed traffic highway. Permissible traffic capacities for roadways of different widths have been studied, and some major methods for raising traffic capacity have been put forward. Secondly, in this paper, some suggestions are provided for constructing roads with separated fast and slow traffic lanes. The design criteria studied include: traffic volume and type, minimum design speed, and the width and the cross section dimension of the fast traffic lane. Factors such as the roads passing through towns and the reduction of the influence of intersections at grade on road operating quality have been analysed briefly as well. (Author/TRRL)
