CUSTOMIZATION VERSUS A GENERAL PURPOSE CODE FOR ROUTING AND SCHEDULING PROBLEMS: A POINT OF VIEW. VEHICLE ROUTING: METHODS AND STUDIES. STUDIES IN MANAGEMENT SCIENCE AND SYSTEMS - VOLUME 16

This paper tries to summarize our experience with real life problems involving the routing and scheduling of vehicles. Our experience, coming from a biased sample of these problems, reveals that each problem tends to be different and necessitates particular attention. We suggest that no single algorithm may be appropriate in all, or even in a large number of, situations. Consequently, we feel that it is necessary to develop a general approach that can be adapted by experts to each particular situation. We briefly describe the problems we have dealt with to illustrate our points. (Author/TRRL)
