METABOLISM OF ETHANOL IN HEALTHY MEN AND WOMEN AND COMPARISON OF WIDMARK PARAMETERS AND BLOOD/BREATH RATIOS OF ETHANOL BETWEEN THE SEXES. WOMEN, ALCOHOL, DRUGS AND TRAFFIC - PROCEEDINGS OF THE INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP, STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN, 29-30 SEPTEMBER, 1988
Healthy men (n=67) and women (n=64) drank a bolus dose of either 0.40 or 0.80 g ethanol/kg body weight in 5-10 minutes; no strict control was made of their previous intake of food. Samples of capillary whole-blood and end-expired breath were analysed at 30-60 minute intervals timed from start of drinking. Ethanol was determined in blood by an enzymatic (adh) method and in expired air by alcolmeter ae-d1 (fuel-cell sensor) or intoxilyzer 4011 (infra-red detector). Widmark parameters and blood/breath ratios of alcohol were calculated with emphasis on sex-related and dose-related differences. The distribution volume of ethanol (r) was lower for women 0.768 plus or minus 0.0711 l/kg (plus or minus sd) compared with men 0.849 plus or minus 0.0816 l/kg (p<0.05). The slope of the pseudo-linear elimination phase was steeper for women than for men; 15.8 plus or minus 1.96 mg/dl/h compared with 13.7 plus or minus 1.80 mg/dl/h (p<0.05). The rate of removal of alcohol from the body as a whole (turnover) was, however, not significantly different between the sexes; women 120 plus or minus 14.4 mg/kg/h and men 116 plus or minus 13.2 mg/kg/h (p>0.05). The mean capillary-blood/breath ratios of alcohol were 2.159 plus or minus 205 (range 1.621-2.683) for women and 2.121 plus of minus 219 (range 1.669-2.922) for men; no significant difference (p>0.05).
