TRAFFIC FATALITIES AMONG WOMEN IN NORTHERN SWEDEN. WOMEN, ALCOHOL, DRUGS AND TRAFFIC - PROCEEDINGS OF THE INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP, STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN, 29-30 SEPTEMBER, 1988

This paper presents a retrospective study of 913 individuals killed in traffic accidents in northern Sweden. Of these, 145 were female and 358 male victims dying in accidents involving passenger cars. We made a comparative analysis of these female and male victims, and found that females and males differed with respect to mean age, the distribution of the accidents by month, day and also to some extent hour of the day, the position of the deceased, previous somatic disease, the frequency of drunken driving, the mean blood alcohol concentration, and the frequency of pathological liver changes. Our study revealed no significant increase in the number of inebriated female victims during the period investigated, but the findings may imply that preventive measures to be undertaken in drunken driving differ between females and males.
