THE INCIDENCE OF ALCOHOL IMPAIRED DRIVING IN FEMALE DRIVERS IN YUGOSLAVIA. WOMEN, ALCOHOL, DRUGS AND TRAFFIC - PROCEEDINGS OF THE INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP, STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN, 29-30 SEPTEMBER, 1988

This paper discusses drinking habits, attitudes to drinking and driving as well as driving under the influence of alcohol in males and females in different regions of Yugoslavia. In urban areas, intoxicated pedestrians and bicycle riders represent a great danger in traffic as well as car drivers. In some regions of Yugoslavia, the percentage of drunken drivers involved in fatal or injury accidents ranges from 25-46%. The percentage of female drivers among these drunken drivers is 15%, which is almost in proportion to the percentage of women drivers. Women aged over 55 are less likely to drive when under the influence of alcohol. Young female drivers aged between 18-25 are almost as likely to drive while drunk as men. The amount of drunkenness amongst women drivers varies considerably between regions. However there is little difference between urban areas, which indicates the greater emancipation of the younger generation of female drivers. (TRRL)
