ATTITUDES TOWARDS DRINKING AND DRIVING: THEIR ROLE IN THE EFFCTIVENESS OF COUNTERMEASURES
The effectiveness of drinking and driving countermeasures is discussed. It is noted that enforcement only reduces impaired driving temporarily, and there is no evidence to demonstrate the effectiveness of severe sanctions in promoting specific or general deterrence. The reasons for the lack of success of the countermeasures are considered. The perception of the motorist as to whether he is contravening the law when he drives after drinking. It is noted that this depends on the knowledge of the law and of the effects of alcohol, and of their attitude towards the issue. Each of these areas is discussed in this paper. The need is noted for more informative propaganda campaigns .
