DRY PEA AND LENTIL EXPORTS TO THE UNITED STATES: AN EXAMPLE OF HOW THE CANADIAN RAIL TRANSPORTATION SUBSIDY NEGATIVELY IMPACTS CERTAIN UNITED STATES INDUSTRIES
This paper contains an estimation of the effect the transportation subsidy from the Canadian Western Grain Transportation Act has on cost of transporting peas and lentils to market in the U.S. The subsidy has increased the ability of Canadian dry peas and lentils to compete in the Eastern United States market by lowering the transport cost of Canadian product to U.S. consumers. Passage of The Canadian/United States Free Trade Agreement does not alter this situation.
