Carriers Insurance Company worked with Resource Analysis, an industrial consulting firm, in researching the feasibility of identifying good drivers while effectively screening out poor ones. A perfect driver profile was developed which serves as the measure for comparison to drivers taking a driver analysis test. The driver analysis test is a simple, yet effective testing system, which takes about 50 minutes to complete. In addition to containing the usual items of a driver's personnel file, the test includes a driver self-appraisal of safety practices and perceptions of professional truck driving. A psychological profile is also included. This article presents the results of a recent six-month study by Resource Analysis that evaluated two control groups of 200 drivers each. Benefits from the driver analysis system included decreased turnover, decreased number of incidents, and decreased fuel consumption. "Managing for Success" is a computer analysis of a candidate's responses to the driver analysis test, revealing attitudes and predicting performance. It is a key to the total performance of the system.
