DIESEL ENGINE--THE CLEAN UP IS ON...

1989 has been designated Diesel Alert Year by Friends of the Earth who are pressing for US standards on diesel emissions to be adopted by the European Community. These are particularly stringent for city buses which must meet new US emissions regulations by 1991 and even harsher ones in 1994. Should, and will, Europe adopt US standards? Or will future European regulations be even more stringent?
