X-RAY VISION USED ON CALIFORNIA BRIDGES
It is described how Caltrans (California Department of Transportation) is using the nondestructive technique of radiography to guarantee the highest quality of welding and ensure the safety of its structures. The procedure is being used by the Welding and Metals Technology Unit to inspect suspender ropes on suspension bridges. The importance of suspender rope sockets on suspension spans is explained. The inspection of the suspender rope sockets on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and the Vincent Thomas Bridge, Southern California are described.
