INTERMODALISM'S IMPACT ON TRANSPORTATION. NATIONAL CONFERENCE OF STATE RAILWAY OFFICIALS
As the use of double-stack containers for freight transportation continues to increase, the author sees intermodalism as the answer to providing the best service. He further states that our nation must get away from modal thinking and competition and move toward more cooperative, multi-modal methods of providing transportation. Although, using double-stack containers on unit trains, will decrease long-haul trucking, the benefits in the form of less wear on highways, lower fuel taxes, etc., should outweigh any serious concerns.
