CONTRACTOR STAKING: SAVING PUBLIC-WORKS DOLLARS
Arizona's Department of Transportation's new program of 'Contractor Staking' is described. In this concept, the state's role consists of 2 distinct responsibilities: the responsibililty of providing initial survey control data from which the contractor will do his own surveying; state surveyors provide quality control as they spot-check the work performed by the contractor's survey crew. The contractor must now plan ahead in order to have surveyors available to provide needed information for each phase of the work. If construction staking is not completed on time then the contractor must bear the burden of idling key operations and equipment. Also, errors due to improper calculations or layout are now borne by the contractor instead of the state. Aspects of the program are discussed in the paper. Contractor Staking is a viable option for transportation and nontransportation agencies alike.
