MELLIN TRANSFORM APPLIED TO UNCERTAINTY ANALYSIS IN HYDROLOGY/HYDRAULICS
A mathematical integral transform technique called the Mellin transform are described, and its application to the uncertainty analysis of hydrologic and hydraulic problems is demonstrated. The Mellin transform is attractive and simple to use when the dependent random variable is related to several independent random variables in a multiplicative manner. Under such conditions, exact values of the moments of any order can be derived with simple algebraic manipulations. It is noted that the Mellin transform gives an expression of uncertainty in model output that is amenable for analytical sensitivity analysis.
