COMPREHENSIVE TRANSPORTATION MODELS: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE
This article presents an overview of comprehensive transportation modeling (CTM), the types of use these models serve, and their strengths and weaknesses. It identifies areas where there have been significant advances in modeling technology and where further advances are anticipated. CTM systematically models the principal characteristics and performance of a transportation system. Developments in CTM are occurring in three areas: computer technology, analytic structure of models, and computational tools. These are affecting planning in a parallel manner. This article traces these developments and their implications.
