SINGLE TRACKING: SUCCESS OR FAILURE?
Positive experiences using single tracking combined with centralized traffic control on the Florida East Coast Railway, Soo Line and Illinois Central are detailed. While this approach seemed to work well for these particular railroads, Grand Trunk Western's (GTS) experience was not so positive. It was determined that double tracking was best suited for GTW's needs as the volume GTW handles was too much for single track and centralized traffic control to handle and maintain or improve its level of service to its customers. Another railway, Monongahela Railway, has also opted to use double tracking.
