STRAIN TENSOR AND DEFORMATION FOR GRANULAR MATERIAL
A new form of strain tensor for granular material is introduced to include the description of both translation and rotation for particles in the granular media. The strain measure is useful in description for the constitutive relationship for granular media. This strain tensor may be used to derive an analytical model for the deformation behavior of granular materials which includes the effect of particle rotations. The model assumes that the particle displacement field is linear. Experimental results on the deformation of rod assemblies of various packing structures were made under isotropic initial stress condtions. The measured results were used to evaluuate the applicability of the theoretical model.
