ANALYSIS OF MEMBRANE PENETRATION IN TRIXIAL TEST

An analytical investigation of membrane penetration and an experimentally confirmed approximate method for prediction of membrane penetration are described in this paper. Solution of the membrane penetration problem using the improved model yields a relationship between net membrane pressure and membrane penetration volume change. The improved model shows very good agreement with the membrane penetration behavior observed in tests using a specially designed membrane penetration frame and on actual soil samples. This improved model is a reasonable method for prediction of membrane behavior for triaxial testing of uniform coarse grained soils.
