KETTLEMAN HILLS WASTE LANDFILL SLOPE FAILURE II: STABILITY ANALYSES

The investigation is reported that was performed to determine both the cause of the failure of the dam and appropiate methods of testing and analysis to preclude the possibility of similar failures at other facilities. The testing, analyses, and related studies to determine the cause of the failure are reported here and in a companion paper. In the companion paper conclusions are drawn concerning the properties appropriate for evaluation of the waste landfill stability. In this paper these properties are used in stability analyses to provide a probable explanation for the cause of the failure and to investigate the applicability of the test results and analysis procedures for predicting the stability of other waste fills placed in this type of liner-protected facility. Two types of stability analyses were performed: conventional 2-dimensional stability analyses of nine representative cross sections, and 3-dimensional analyses of the overall waste-fill and liner configuration. The study results are presented and discussed.
