An approximate method is proposed to obtain a realistic estimate of the equivalent stiffness of a layered system, when its individual properties are known. This weighted average method stresses the location and extent of the component layers relative to the foundations base. The theoretical predictions were studied by a series of simple experiments. The results obtained using different materials of different thicknesses were predicted analytically using both Odemark's and the newly proposed theoretical procedures. Comparison was made of the accuracy of prediction between the 2 methods. The advantages in the proposed method are demonstrated by its applicability to both 2- and 3-layer systems.
