INTERMODAL AS GOOD AS ITS TERMINALS

Keeping passengers, freight and equipment moving in the most expeditious and timely manner is a major concern of both railroaders and shippers in the intermodal business. Methods used by various service providers are noted which address some of the major problems facing intermodal operators. They include documentation-which can slow departures because it may not reach the gate before the shipment; chassis management-having chassis pools at terminals; highway access-local roads can not always meet expanding rail and highway growth; train schedules-need to be reviewed to coordinate them with truck arrivais; facility configuration-older facilities are not technologically capable of handling the demands of today's environment, but providers are reluctant to invest in upgrades to them; and equipment condition-if repairs are needed, and no repair personnel are on site, this causes delays.
