GIS/LIS IN HENNEPIN COUNTY: THE REAL DEAL
Five metropolitan counties that include and surround Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota originally set out to establish a geographic information system/land information system (GIS/LIS) independently. More recently, they have cooperated to create a system that is compatible among all the agencies involved. The GIS/LIS not only satifies the counties' needs, but provides a system that will serve individual municipalities and area agencies as well as the Minnesota Department of Transportation. This article relates the history of the GIS/LIS development in Hennepin County, including the lengthy debate over its accuracy, and equipment and personnel selection. The current status of Hennepin County's system is discussed, and future plans are outlined.
