VOLVO TAKES THE LEAD IN DRIVE TO CUT DIESEL ENGINE FUMES

This brief article describes results of trials on an exhaust filter to clean up diesel engine exhaust fumes. The filters, known as particulate traps, remove the black sooty particles in diesel exhaust fumes, and should be capable of being fitted to commercial lorries and trucks by early 1990. The aim is to cut particulate emissions by at least 80%, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons should be decreased by at least 50% and 60% respectively. Both fuel consumption and driveability will be unimpaired. The filter is cleaned electrically when the truck is stopped, or by high exhaust temperatures during normal operations. (TRRL)
