INFILTRATION CAPACITY AND FUNCTION OF THE PERVIOUS ROAD CONSTRUCTION CALLED "THE UNIT SUPER STRUCTURE" AFTER SOME YEARS OF USE

The infiltration capacity and function of the pervious road construction called, "the unit super structure", have been studied at 15 sites in Sweden. The surfaces studied have been used for 1-5 years and they were all located near the Swedish West coast. The study comprises mapping of damage on the asphalt surfaces, measurements of infiltration capacity, drillsampling of asphalt and sampling of materials at different levels in the super structure. The measurements show that the infiltration capacity of the asphalt decreases even during normal traffic load if the surface is not cleaned regularly. A method for cleaning of clogged surfaces has been tested on site and in laboratory and the results are promising. The unit super structure is suitable for use on surface with low traffic intensity, such as parking lots, industrial areas, pedestrian roads and bicycle roads if: the project is made so that no overland flow can occur from adjacent surfaces; appropriate de-icing methods must be used; and, the asphalt surface must be cleaned regularly for the drainage function to be maintained.
