LIMIT SPANS OF COMPOSITE PRESTRESSED CONCRETE GIRDERS

The article presents a method for determining the limit span in three possible cases; 1) girder with a single cross section, 2) composite girder prestressed in a single phase and 3) composite girder prestressed in two phases. The example of a girder with a single cross section shows that the limit span based on the Guyon's limit span equals the one obtained in the condition of permissible stresses used for the formulation of an algorithm for the limit span of composite girders. The method is also used in the case of partial prestressing underlying its possible application. Finally, the method is explained on a numerical example and the accuracy of the derived expression is proved by marginal stresses in all three cases. (TRRL)
