A STUDY TO SHOW PATTERNS OF VEHICLE USE IN LONDON AREA. SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT TO CR 131

This report presents the results of a study concerned with reviewing the estimates of the attributes of journeys made by vehicles in the London area. The study was directed specifically at the estimates of travel on motorways, including the m25, and on local roads contained in report CR131 "a study to show patterns of vehicle use in the London area". (see IRRD 820245). The study showed that when account is taken of the m25, the total number of kilometres driven in 1981 by vehicles on motorways in the London area was estimated to have been 8267 million vehicle kilometres. The total number of kilometres driven in 1981 by vehicles on local roads in the London area was estimated to have been 6677 million vehicle kilometres. The revised estimate of total vehicle kilometres driven on all roads in the London area in 1981 is 30458 million vehicle kilometres, and of the corresponding total number of journeys by vehicles is approximately 3620 million journeys. Hence, a more detailed picture of travel patterns in London has been produced than that reported in CR131. The statistical assessment contained in CR131 remains valid for both the original and supplementary studies. (Author/TRRL)
