HONG KONG AND ITS UNDERGROUND STRATEGY
Construction projects associated with tunnelling and underground excavation are playing an increasingly important part in the future of Hong Kong. Here, the dense urbanisation, environmental awareness and demands for improved transport facilities have shown the need for major tunnelling projects for roads, mass transit, water supply, and sewerage. Despite the uncertain future for the territory, economic confidence is high and private enterprise is likely to participate strongly in such schemes. A brief review is included of a range of tunnelling schemes for transport applications such as cross-harbour and mass transit development. (TRRL)
