JET GROUTED ANCHORS PUT TO THE TEST

GKN Colcrete's project at Sandgate in Kent where 50 jet grouted working anchors and 3 test anchors are installed demonstrates a technique for applying high loads through a short fixed length in clayey, sandy, silty soils. Neither of the two established anchoring methods of under reaming or pressure grouting were found to be suitable in such conditions. The anchors are to prop a cantilever bored pile wall installed through a steep coastal slope creating a platform for a block of flats. Jet grout diameter enhancement of these short fixed length anchors was opted for using a technique developed since a licence was negotiated with the Japanese inventors. The technique is discussed in detail with diagrams. Assuming no restriction on overall anchor length, GKN Colcrete would have used its single bore multiple anchor system (sbma) which is also described. Recent comparisons show the superiority of SBMA anchors over injection grouted anchors. The performance of the firm's latest rod, positively activated multiple under reamer is mentioned. (TRRL)
