EQUIPMENT REPORT

Sixty six combination catenary/battery locomotives have been ordered for the channel tunnel. Capable of carrying 440 tonnes, the trains will operate in double-head traction. The CTM5 from Dosco Overseas Engineering offers fast excavation of circular tunnels with simultaneous erection of stall ring supports. The recently opened Leopold II road tunnel in Brussels illustrates the use of Eternit's glasal panels. Constructed of a fibre cement base with mineral coating, they exhibit excellent properties for tunnel secondary lining including the facility to incorporate signs. Chemgrout's cg500hp high pressure grout plant delivers up to 12 gal/min at 1250 lb/sq in, 10 gal/min at 1600 lb/sq in and 8 gal/min 2000 lb/sq in. Several types of putzmeister equipment are being used for the channel tunnel including pumps, mortar injection plant and a large muck pumping system. Robbins have provided tunnelling machines at Sangatte for the channel tunnel and will colaborate with Kawasaki on further machines. Rammer's new lightweight hammer, the alto, features an impact frequency of 2000 blows per minute. Augers unlimited's 900 mm boring machine 36d is designed for the easy lift storage of power train components. An increase in the use of Depont'K kevlar for reinforcing conveyor belts is described. The Pegasus AT46 all terrain lifting platform with a working height of 14 M and outreach of 6.2 m played a key role in the construction of Sodra station, Stockholm. The advantages of Tracktotechnik's Grumdoram pipe pushing machines include simple operation and specially developed accessories. Teledyne Canada mining products' DS25 is a scaler which can maintain the back elevation with minimum of overbreak. A number of hydraulic and pneumatic measuring systems developed by Gloetzl Gesellschaft Fuer Baumesstechnick are described. (TRRL)
