IMPROVED DURABILITY OF EPOXY BONDS TO MILD STEEL - A NOVEL PRETREATMENT

A ligating system has been discovered which provides a solution to the problem of the poor durability of epoxy bonds to mild steel. When applied as a surface pretreatment before bonding with Permabond's ESP106 heat-cured, toughened epoxy adhesive, attack by water at the metal oxide-polymer interface is eliminated. Single-lap joints which have been immersed in warm water for over a year fracture entirely by cohesive failure of the adhesive layer, at a shear strength higher than achieved by any alternative surface pretreatment. The results are better than those obtained with chromate systems. (Author/TRRL)
