PAVEMENT DESIGN USING LOCAL MATERIALS. 27TH ARRB REGIONAL SYMPOSIUM, LAUNCESTON, TASMANIA, 1989. PROGRAM AND PAPERS

Of the local roads maintained by Tasmanian councils a large percentage are gravel roads. These roads are generally less heavily trafficked (both with respect to volume and axle loading) than those maintained by the department of main roads. The comments in this paper relate only to these roads. This paper provides a summary of tasmanian experience with respect to design and maintenance of gravel roads. These roads vary in nature from providing access to a limited number of rural properties carrying little traffic to quite significant collector roads. Issues discussed range from design methods, use of local gravels or quarry products and various methods of in situ stabilisation. Case histories are given where possible. (Author/TRRL)
