INVESTIGATION OF DIFFERENT BINDERS FOR SURFACE DRESSINGS, SKOVVEJEN, TEST SERIES III. RESULTS AFTER 3 YEARS IN SERVICE

FORSOEG MED BINDEMIDLER TIL OVERFLADENBEHANDLING. SKOVVEJEN, FORSOEGSSERIE III. RESULTATER EFTER 3 AARS BRUG

Different bitumens have been tested as binders for surface dressing on twelve test sections, each 700 m long. The binders comprised 5 straight run bitumens, 1 sbs-bitumen, 1 sr-bitumen, 1 br-bitumen, 1 wax-modified bitumen, and 1 chemcrete modified bitumen. The binders were applied AS Emulsions, cutbacks or unmodified. The test sections were established in 1983. The change in penetration at 25 deg C, R and B softening point and fraass breaking point was measured after 3 years in service. The straight run bitumens showed moderate changes in rheological properties: softening points increased by o-9 deg c, penetration decreased by 10-58% and breaking point increased by 0-5 deg c. All the breaking points were less than 18 deg c. The change in properties of the modified binders depends on the modifier. An increase in softening point of 11-34 deg c, a decrease in penetration between 27 and 75%, and an increase breaking point of 0-3 deg c was obtained. An exception was the chemcrete modified bitumen with an increase in breaking point from -28 to -13 deg c. In the heavily trafficked lane an increase in rut depth of 1-2 mm, a decrease in friction value from 0.85 to 0.75, and a certain crushing of the largest aggregate fraction was found. The findings were independent of the type of binder. Bleeding appears to be directly related to the amount of binder used, is also independent of the type of binder. (Author/TRRL)
