ADHESION OF WATERPROOFING ON CONCRETE BRIDGES. LABORATORY AND FIELD STUDIES

KLAEBNING AF FUGTISOLERING TIL BETONBROER. LABORATORIE OG MARKUNDERSOEGELSER

The adhesion between concrete bridge decks and a waterproofing layer consisting of bituminous sheets has been studied. Adhesion failure is normally connected with humid and wet concrete. Test methods to predict adhesion failure between wet concrete and waterproofing have been developed. By means of these methods more than 100 bituminous primers have been tested as an adhesion bridge between concrete and bituminous waterproofing. It was found that certain coupling agents might improve the adhesion under wet conditions, but not sufficiently. Certain synthetic primers based on epoxy resin, acrylic resin, chlorinated rubber, or polyurethane show permanent bonding to wet concrete, but adhesion failure may occur between primer and adhesive bitumen. It has been shown, however, that this problem can be overcome by use of suitable coupling agents in the formulation of the primer. Torch welding of the sheets destroys most of the synthetic primers, but they can be protected by a bituminous primer applied on top of the synthetic primer. The laboratory tests have further revealed that it might be possible to carry out the waterproofing on newer and wetter concrete than hitherto specified if the best of the synthetic primers are applied. However, this possibility must be closely examined before it is carried out on a big scale. (Author/TRRL)
