TAKING THE MEASURE OF THE WONDER FABRICS

The author describes an increase in the use of fabrics in civil engineering in recent years. Previously used under the name of carpet backing, mulch or strawberry nets, a wide variety of textiles are now available and they are considered under the headings of geomembranes, geotextiles, biodegradable blankets and geogrids. A geomembrane is defined as being totally impermeable to liquids and gases. Examples are plastic sheeting or building paper and their use is well established. Biodegradable blankets, or mats, have been in use for centuries in combatting erosion. Constituents depend on indigenous vegetation but are most frequently straw, coir or pine shavings. Geotextiles are used principally as separation layers but can also be used as drainage layers. They may be either woven or non-woven. The geogrid market is dominated by Netlon and a wide variety of applications are described. Of particular interest is the use of geogrids in asphalt overlay repair works where they prevent rutting and reflective cracking. (TRRL)
